Right on Connecticut Avenue, in northwest Washington D.C, there’s a zoo, and it just might be the best one in the entire metropolitan area. The National Zoo is filled with about 2,000 animals from about 400 different species, so there’s quite a lot to see. It’s no surprise people flock from all over just to spend a day with the family, the significant other, or with the curious little ones among the abundant wildlife.
Founded in 1889, the zoo’s mission is to be leaders in animal care, while providing education to all the visitors. Hence, they have a 163 acre park dedicated to keeping the animals safe, while providing excitement to all the visitors. They provide educational programs and shows, several exhibits, crafted to make the animals feel at home, while making it fun for the sightseers, and even shops and restaurants to get a quick bite and relax for a bit.
Being on Connecticut, and sporting a giant sign at the gates, The National Zoo is quite easy to find. The fact that admission is free also makes things easy. Parking is the only thing to worry about, as with every hotspot in the city, but taking the metro is always a great solution.
So next time you feel like spending a relaxing day in the outdoors, go to The National Zoo. It’s free, parking is cheap, the metro is cheap, and you’ll have fun whether you’re with friends, family, kids, or your partner. You’ll learn while having a great time among the cute small animals, and the large intimidating ones.
